It's been a tumultuous year for John Galliano, one of fashion's most iconic and at times controversial figures. After announcing an impending creative partnership with global fashion giant Zara in March, and subsequent public discourse around his past actions, his highly anticipated collection has finally been unveiled. Titled "Re{form}," the collaboration aims to reinterpret Zara's extensive archives through Galliano's distinctive lens.
The collection's moniker, "Re{form}," speaks directly to Galliano's design process. He delved into Zara's historical "archetypes", what many might consider everyday basics like slip dresses and button-downs, and transformed them into fantastical, high-fashion pieces.
Applying his considerable couture expertise, he reworked these fundamental shapes with new materials and intricate detailing.
Imagine a simple khaki skirt, now bunched and knotted into an asymmetrical, almost floral adornment, or the top of a wool coat, raggedly sliced at the chest, flowing into a tulle sheath finished with faux fur.
Galliano's signature deconstructionist whimsy is evident throughout. A traditional wool plaid pencil skirt reveals a quarter of a lace-trimmed slip when turned. Archival black pants are "re{form}ed" into Napoleonic high-waisted trousers, while a classic slip dress becomes an empire-line gown in rose-gold, foil-printed cotton lace with puff sleeves and star-shaped vinyl cut-outs.
The collection also includes accessories, such as "winklepickers" boots with elongated toes and the unique "Trichic" handbag, which resembles a patent black or metallic leather pouch with a chain strap.
This first installment of "Re{form}" is notably genderless and draws inspiration from Galliano's recurring motif: "Les Incroyables and Les Merveilleuses." These "defiant dandies and divas of post-Revolutionary France" are a nod to his 1984 Saint Martins graduation collection and themes frequently seen in his work at Christian Dior from 1996 to 2011. There are also subtle references to his later Margiela era, particularly the Artisanal 2024 collection, seen in delicate mesh dresses with ribbon and tulle roses layered over bias-cut slips.
Beyond the design, the timing of this collection is significant given the current collectors' market for Galliano's vintage pieces. His creations from his Dior tenure have recently commanded astonishing prices at auction, with some items fetching over 600,000 euros. In stark contrast, the "Re{form}" collection for Zara is far more accessible, with prices ranging from $29.90 to $999.
This pricing strategy is likely to ensure these unique pieces won't stay on shelves for long.
The collection will make its debut during Paris Fashion Week at an exclusive installation at the Hôtel Particulier, accessible by appointment via Zara.com. A global release for shopping is scheduled for October 1st.
