More than 1,000 passengers are aboard the Ambition cruise ship, which is currently docked in Bordeaux after 49 people fell ill with gastroenteritis. Local health authorities said three passengers have been isolated in their cabins and that others on board are not allowed to disembark. Officials also stressed there is no evidence tying the illness to a hantavirus outbreak reported on a different cruise ship.
The ship set sail from Belfast on Friday and headed to Liverpool before turning toward France. The operator said there was a reported rise in cases after guests boarded in Liverpool and that enhanced sanitation and prevention protocols have been put in place across the vessel. As of 11:00 BST on Wednesday, 48 passengers and one crew member were displaying symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal illness.
On board the Ambition are 1,187 guests and 514 crew members. The operator confirmed that a 92-year-old man died onboard on Sunday; officials said his death is being investigated by a coroner and has not been linked to the ongoing illness at this stage. The company extended condolences to the deceased's friends and family and said it would provide support as investigators work to determine the cause.
Health authorities describe gastroenteritis on ships as commonly caused by norovirus or other pathogens, often spread by close contact or contaminated food. In response, the vessel has increased cleaning, sanitization, and medical monitoring, with isolation measures for affected individuals and heightened hygiene protocols across public areas. Passengers and crew have been urged to monitor symptoms and report any signs promptly.
Crucially, officials noted there is no immediate risk to the port or to Bordeaux occupants beyond those aboard the ship, and investigators will determine if any specific source contributed to the illness.
