Rajnath Singh commissions ICG's Samudra Pratap in Goa
Indigenously designed pollution control vessel Samudra Pratap joins the ICG, featuring 60% local content and 22+ knot speed, boosting pollution response and resilience.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned the Indian Coast Guard’s first indigenously designed and built pollution control vessel Samudra Pratap in Vasco, Goa, on January 5, 2026. The 114.5-metre, 4,200-tonne vessel was built by Goa Shipyard Limited and boasts more than 60% indigenous content. Officials say it can cruise at speeds beyond 22 knots and has an endurance of 6,000 nautical miles, enabling it to operate across vast stretches of India's coastline and EEZ.
The Samudra Pratap is slated to play a critical role in enforcing marine pollution control regulations, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and safeguarding India’s Exclusive Economic Zone. Its arrival strengthens the Coast Guard’s capability to respond quickly to environmental incidents and maritime emergencies, while also expanding the fleet’s blue-water reach.
Rajnath Singh drew a link between the vessel and India’s broader maritime vision, noting that marine resources are a shared heritage of humanity and that India is committed to responsible stewardship. The defence minister highlighted the government’s emphasis on women’s empowerment within the Coast Guard, pointing out that women officers are serving in frontline roles such as pilots, observers, air traffic controllers, and logistics officers, and are being trained for operations including hovercraft missions.
The Samudra Pratap was formally delivered to the Coast Guard in December and was commissioned today at GSL, Vasco, in South Goa. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Union Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, and ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani were among the dignitaries present. With this vessel, the ICG aims to bolster its pollution response, firefighting, and maritime safety capabilities, reinforcing India’s stance as a responsible maritime power.
