Ram Temple Funds Under Scanner: UP Govt Launches SIT Probe!

The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a high-level, three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe serious allegations concerning the alleged disappearance of donation funds intended for the construction of the Ayodhya Ram Temple. This decisive move comes amid escalating controversy and a request from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust itself, following widespread concerns and a recovery of funds from an employee's residence.

The SIT comprises Lucknow divisional commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, inspector general of police (Lucknow range) Kiran S, and special secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan. Their mandate is to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter and submit a preliminary report within seven days, with a final report due in 15 days, highlighting the urgency the state government places on the issue.

The controversy gained significant traction with the recovery of ₹10 lakh from the residence of an employee involved in counting cash donations in Ayodhya. Subsequently, the Trust's general secretary, Champat Rai, addressed the allegations, stating that the Trust regularly conducts internal audits and that the current audit process was still underway. Rai affirmed that nothing significant had been detected so far but acknowledged the need for an impartial probe. The Trust also stated that the allegations were part of a "serious conspiracy aimed at tarnishing the image of the Teerth Kshetra and hurting the sentiments of millions of devotees," emphasizing that "the truth must be brought to light."

Adding to the complexity, former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh reportedly indicated prior knowledge of the alleged misuse of donations but refrained from disclosing details. Meanwhile, Ram Temple Construction Committee chairman Nripendra Mishra has distanced himself from the ongoing controversy, underscoring the sensitive nature of the issue.

The unfolding events have also drawn significant political attention. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav intensified his criticism of the Yogi Adityanath-led government, suggesting that the source of the conspiracy was "not far away" and action would be straightforward if the truth emerged. The Congress party has also joined the chorus, demanding transparency and accountability in the handling of public donations for such a revered project. The formation of the SIT is seen as a crucial step towards bringing clarity and ensuring justice in a matter that has deeply impacted the sentiments of millions of devotees across the nation.
