Kyrgios Admits 'Huge Mistake' After Cocaine Test, Faces Ban!

Tennis sensation Nick Kyrgios has openly admitted to making a "huge mistake" after testing positive for cocaine, leading to a provisional ban from the sport. The former Wimbledon finalist's sample, taken during the Mallorca Open in June, confirmed the presence of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.

A provisional suspension has been in effect for Kyrgios since August 4th. While he has the right to appeal this decision, the Australian player has, so far, chosen not to. This ban means he cannot participate in or even attend any Grand Slams or officially sanctioned tennis events across both men's and women's tours.

Kyrgios addressed the issue directly through a statement posted on his Instagram. He stated, "I wanted you to hear this from me first. I recently failed a drug test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine. I made a huge mistake and I take full responsibility for it." He extended his apologies to his fans, family, sponsors, and everyone close to him, emphasizing his deep disappointment in himself, especially for the example set for children who look up to him.

This incident adds another challenging chapter to Kyrgios's recent career, which has been plagued by injury problems. He last competed at Wimbledon, where he lost in the first round of doubles. Before that, his appearance at the Mallorca Open saw him beaten in straight sets by fellow Australian Adam Walton. These were among only four singles matches Kyrgios has played this season.

His recent injury woes include knee surgery in early 2023, followed by a torn ligament in his wrist six months later, an injury that kept him off the court for a year and a half. These ongoing issues have significantly limited his time playing, with only one Grand Slam singles appearance since his 2023 knee surgery.
