Kannur: Senior CPI leader M V Jayarajan rejected misappropriation charges against a Left MLA and said that V Kunhikrishnan has become a weapon in the hand of the enemies. He noted that two commissions set up by the party found no misappropriation by any CPI worker, and that Kunhikrishnan's statements contradict past party practice.
Kunhikrishnan had alleged that CPI MLA from Payyanur T I Madhusoodanan misappropriated ₹1 crore collected to assist the family of a slain left party worker. Jayarajan said the Kannur District Committee of the party will take an appropriate decision, while the state secretary M V Govindan dismissed the charge saying there was no misappropriation.
Kunhikrishnan told reporters that he spoke out because the party did not act on his complaints for four to five years. He said the party used to decide on such matters after examining merits, but now decisions seem to hinge on protecting the accused and shielding them with commissions that clear their names while crucifying the complainant.
On the wider political stage, the dispute highlights strains within CPI(M) as it seeks to defend its record while contending with allegations of fund mismanagement. The leadership in Thiruvananthapuram has backed the commissions and insisted the allegations lack basis, setting the stage for a tense intra-party debate in the days ahead.
