A former co-founder of the clothing brand Superdry has been jailed for eight years after being found guilty of raping a woman following a night out in Cheltenham. James Holder, 54, had been due to head home in a taxi with a male friend, but instead accompanied the victim to her flat in Cheltenham, where the assault took place.
The victim told the court that she repeatedly asked Holder to stop as the assault began, but he continued even as she cried. She described feeling vulnerable and intoxicated at the time, and said Holder acted as if he was entitled to do what he wanted with her body. The statement she gave in court spoke of the lasting impact of the attack on her sense of dignity and safety.
Holder had admitted that sexual activity occurred in May 2022 but argued that it was consensual. A jury disagreed, convicting him after the trial. In mitigation, his barrister said Holder’s wife and two children would also be punished by the sentence he received. The defendant appeared via video link from prison for the sentencing.
