Baruipur Horror: NCW Demands Action on Minor's Rape-Murder & Mob Violence

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken serious note of the horrific rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, and the subsequent outbreak of mob violence. On Monday (July 6, 2026), the Commission demanded a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within a week from Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta.

The Commission's demand covers not only the brutal crime itself but also the alarming incidents that followed, including the lynching of a man allegedly involved, assaults on central forces jawans, and the torching of police vehicles. The NCW has specifically asked for details regarding the registration of the FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the POCSO Act, the immediate arrest of all individuals involved in the rape and murder, and the overall progress of the investigation.

Further, the NCW has sought information on the investigation into the mob lynching, actions taken against those responsible, and an inquiry into any policing lapses or preventive measure failures. They also called for a comprehensive forensic and post-mortem examination, along with ensuring medical, psychological, legal, and compensation support for the victim's family. Emphasizing its "Zero Tolerance policy towards crimes against women and girls," the statutory body urged a swift, impartial, and comprehensive investigation with stringent action against all culprits.

The tragic incident involved a 12-year-old girl who was sexually abused and brutally murdered, with her body later found in a local pond after she was reportedly dumped alive. Autopsy reports indicated horrific injuries and suffocation as the cause of death. Following overnight search operations and interrogations, a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), working with the Baruipur district police, has arrested three of the four suspects named in the FIR, including the prime accused, Ananda Sardar. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has vowed that the government will ensure capital punishment for those found guilty and also suggested a possible communal angle to the unrest and lynching.
