OpenAI unveils ChatGPT Apps SDK, enabling apps with interactive interfaces and data connections to run inside ChatGPT. As 800M weekly users grow and 4M developers join, the AI setup broadens.
A significant update to ChatGPT was revealed by OpenAI, which added apps that can operate directly within the chatbot. This development coincides with ChatGPT's user base increasing from 100 million in 2023 to over 800 million weekly users. At the OpenAI DevDay speech in San Francisco, CEO Sam Altman disclosed that the number of developers utilizing OpenAI's tools has also doubled to 4 million, and that the usage of the API has grown from 300 million tokens per minute to 6 billion.
Developers can now preview the new ChatGPT Apps SDK, which enables them to create apps with interactive interfaces, data connections, and action triggers. The SDK is the set of tools used by developers to create and evaluate ChatGPT apps. The Model Context Protocol (MCP), upon which ChatGPT is based, allows for agent-like behavior.
Apps like Booking.com 🔗, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow will be accessible within ChatGPT as of Monday. Altman stated in his keynote speech that more apps will be released in the upcoming weeks. According to him, developers can start using the SDK to build on Monday. A public app directory for users will be added by OpenAI later this year, along with the ability for developers to submit apps for review.
In the meantime, OpenAI and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced a historic multibillion-dollar deal. AMD will supply OpenAI with the newest iteration of its high-performance graphics chips, which are anticipated to launch next year, according to a joint statement. Additionally, AMD issued a warrant enabling OpenAI to purchase up to 160 million shares of AMD's common stock, or roughly 10% of the business.
AMD shares surged more than 25% in early trading as a result of the partnership. After current and former employees sold about $6.6 billion worth of OpenAI's shares, the company is now valued at $500 billion, according to a Reuters report. The report also stated that the company had authorized sales of more than $10 billion worth of stock on the secondary market. The share sale complements SoftBank's $40 billion primary funding round investment in OpenAI.
