Record heat grips India as Delhi nears 43°C and Karnataka tops 40°C
IMD warns heatwaves across central and northern India as Delhi eyes 43°C while Karnataka records 40°C+ in five districts.
Across the country, heat is tightening its grip as the IMD’s latest data show several states already baking under extreme temperatures. In Karnataka, five districts logged maximums above 40°C on Sunday, with four districts in the north interior and one in the south interior crossing the 40°C mark.
Delhi looks set to buckle under intensifying heat as temperatures may push to around 43°C this week. A yellow alert for heatwave conditions has been issued for the city from Wednesday to Friday, signaling moderate health risks for vulnerable groups and those outdoors for extended periods.
More broadly, IMD forecasts suggest heatwave conditions across central and northern India through April 23, with many states already inside the heat zone. Even after scattered rainfall in some areas, the mercury is expected to stay high as dry, hot winds continue to sweep in from inland regions.
In Telangana, forecasts call for a stormy interlude for some districts, with Hyderabad and surrounding areas receiving a partly cloudy sky and a forecast of thunderstorms on April 20. While this could bring brief relief in spots, heat elsewhere remains intense.
Health authorities urge people to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak sun hours, wear light clothing, and check on the elderly, children, and those with health conditions as temperatures rise. Meteorological officials also remind travelers to plan ahead and carry water and sun protection.
With the heatwave looming, residents are adapting to longer indoor hours, schools and offices adjusting timings where possible, and communities coordinating relief and cooling centers in heat-prone districts.
