Alcaraz & Sabalenka Blaze Through US Open Second Round; Brit Boulter Falls

The US Open saw some thrilling action on Wednesday as defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka powered their way into the third round, much to the relief of fans and tournament organisers who were clearing a backlog of rain-delayed matches. However, it wasn't all good news for British fans, as Katie Boulter was unfortunately beaten.

Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish second seed, took centre stage on Arthur Ashe Stadium. He dropped the opening set against Jaime Faria, sparking momentary concerns about his recent wrist injury. But Alcaraz quickly found his rhythm, unleashing superb shot-making to dominate the rest of the match, winning 4-6 6-0 6-3 6-2.

After spending two hours and 40 minutes on court, Alcaraz admitted he "wanted to be quick," but ultimately felt it was a good test for his physical condition.

It was really good for me to test everything physically, to test my body, how I feel, and tomorrow how I'm going to feel after this match, after four sets,

he shared.

Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one, was equally, if not more, impressive earlier on the main showcourt. The Belarusian powerhouse crushed Russian qualifier Polina Iatcenko with a decisive 6-1 6-1 victory in just 53 minutes. Her performance dispelled any doubts about her recent form.

However, her post-match press conference took a spiky turn when she bristled at a question regarding her appearances at pre-tournament events. "You guys are, like, a joke. Parties, fun... like, why would you even say that?

Why would you even think about that? What kind of question is that?" she retorted, clarifying that branded activities didn't mean she wasn't training.

While Alcaraz and Sabalenka celebrated their advancements, British hopeful Katie Boulter's journey at the US Open came to an end.

She was outclassed by Karolina Muchova, unable to secure her spot in the next round.

Other notable players making progress included former winner Daniil Medvedev, who even had to weather an avian interruption during his match, and Americans Ben Shelton, Jessica Pegula, Emma Navarro, and Frances Tiafoe, all successfully advancing. Pegula, in particular, had a swift victory, dismantling her opponent in just 56 minutes. The second round certainly delivered a mix of dominant performances, a few surprises, and some classic tennis drama.
