A frightening fire broke out at an elementary school in Tokyo on Friday, June 19, 2026, causing significant concern but thankfully resulting in the safe evacuation of all 300 children and staff. The incident, which occurred at Takinogawa Dai-san School in the northern ward of Kita, saw at least one person injured and several children suffering from smoke inhalation, though no fatalities were reported.
Thick black smoke was seen billowing from a top-floor window after the blaze reportedly ignited in a music room. Fire department officials confirmed that efforts to fully extinguish the fire were underway, and one individual had been hospitalized. The scene was chaotic, with helicopters flying overhead as anxious parents rushed to the school to pick up their children.
The evacuation itself involved dramatic moments. One witness described how children, facing immediate danger, escaped through windows onto a concrete ledge below, where fire crews then used ladders to bring them to safety. A sixth-grade student recounted her experience, stating that she and her classmates, who were two rooms away from the music room, initially smelled smoke and thought someone might be cooking. However, when the siren blared, they realized the severity of the situation.
She detailed how they ran down the stairs, covering their mouths with handkerchiefs, and evacuated to the schoolyard. From there, they witnessed the music room engulfed in flames. The student also mentioned hearing a loud "bang" from the area between the multi-purpose room and the music room. "It was scary, and a lot of kids were crying," she shared. Television footage showed dozens of firefighters actively battling the flames, spraying water from a nearby playing field to control the smoke and fire. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
