A DMRC official, his wife, and their 10-year-old daughter died after a fire ripped through their Delhi home at Metro Apartments near Majlis Park.
A fire ripped through a DMRC official's flat in Delhi early Tuesday, killing three members of the same family. The blaze broke out on the fifth floor of Metro Apartments, a residential complex for DMRC employees located opposite Majlis Park Metro Station in Mukundpur. Delhi Fire Services and police teams battled the flames with six fire tenders, bringing the fire under control after several hours.
The deceased are Ajay Vimal, 45, an Assistant Section Engineer (Signalling and Telecom) with DMRC; his wife Neelam, 38, and their 10-year-old daughter Jahnvi. Vimal, who had joined DMRC in 2006, was posted at Barakhamba Road Metro Station and had been living in the staff quarters since 2016.
Preliminary investigations point to an electrical short circuit involving a room heater in the family's one-bedroom flat. Officials said the main electricity supply likely tripped, but the heater may have continued to burn and helped spread the flames quickly. Smoke inhalation is suspected as a key factor.
Neighbors described the family as warm and helpful. A firefighter sustained minor injuries during the operation. Police have not issued official statements on arrests, and a full probe is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and to assess safety norms at staff housing.
