Winter Denialism: Why We’re All Faking a Ski-Trip Sunburn
Winter Denialism: Why We’re All Faking a Ski-Trip Sunburn
Say goodbye to seasonal depression skin and hello to the 'Toasty' trend. Here is why we are ditching Clean Girl minimalism for messy, expensive-looking windburn.
Listen, stop scrolling for two seconds. We need to have an emergency meeting about what is happening to our faces right now. It is late 2025, it is freezing, and if you are anything like me, your current complexion is giving 'uncooked chicken breast left out on the counter.' I love us, but we look tired. We look like we haven’t seen the sun since the mid-2000s.
But bestie, I have good news. We are officially refusing to participate in winter anymore.
I am talking about the 'Toasty' makeup trend, also known as the Saint-Tropez Winter look. It is dominating my For You Page, it is dominating my group chats, and it needs to dominate your face immediately. If we can’t afford a last-minute flight to the French Alps to sip Aperol Spritzes on a mountain, we are absolutely going to gaslight ourselves into looking like we did.

The Vibe: Rich, Flushed, and Slightly Feral
Here is the deal. For the last few years, we were held hostage by the 'Clean Girl' aesthetic. You know the one. She drinks green juice, she does yoga at 5 AM, and her makeup is so minimal it’s practically invisible.
Well, Clean Girl is out. She is boring. She is that friend who orders hot water with lemon at happy hour. The Toasty look? She is the friend who orders a round of spicy margs, dances on the table, and maybe loses her debit card. She is fun.
This trend is a visual denial of the season. It is not about looking perfect or snatched. It is about looking like you just walked inside from a blizzard and immediately stood in front of a roaring fireplace with a hot toddy. It is messy, it is textured, and it is warm.

How We Are Faking the Flush
Forget everything you learned about precise contouring in 2016. Burn the rulebook. We are not carving out cheekbones today. We are creating a windburn.
To get the Toasty look, you need to step away from the cool-toned powders. Those will just make you look bruised. You need warm, aggressive cream bronzers and blushes that lean into terracottas, deep berries, and brick reds.
Here is the technique:
- The W-Shape: Take your bronzer and stripe it across your face in a W shape. Start at your temple, swoop down to the cheek, go across the bridge of your nose (this is crucial), and up to the other temple. Be generous. We want to look like we forgot to reapply SPF 50 at high altitude.
- Blush Overload: Apply your blush higher than usual. Put it right under your eyes and definitely on the tip of your nose. You want to mimic that distinct post-ski inflammation.
- Faux Freckles: If you really want to sell the fantasy, dot on some fake freckles. It adds that 'I spend time outdoors' texture that implies you have a healthy relationship with nature, even if the only grass you’ve touched lately is a plastic plant in your office lobby.
Why We Are Obsessed
Psychologically, this makes total sense. We are collectively tired of the gloom. The Toasty look is basically seasonal affective disorder treatment in a tube. When I look in the mirror and see a rosy, sun-ravaged glow, my brain releases a tiny bit of serotonin. It tricks me into thinking I am a wealthy heiress on a ski holiday instead of a girl trying to figure out if her milk has expired.
So, grab your ruddiest blush and go ham. Let’s all pretend we are wintering in Saint-Tropez. If anyone asks why you look so sunburned in February, just wink and tell them the slopes were brutal this year.
