Merlin van Lawick, her grandson, gave a moving tribute, telling the crowd, "I promise you this, my dearest, that I will use this clever human heart, I will use this clever human brain I have to find solutions for us to evolve in harmony with nature." He recalled how, whenever his grandmother returned from travels, she brought stories that sparked wonder in all who listened.
Goodall died of cardiac arrest at age 91 while on a speaking tour in California, according to her namesake institute. The service featured eulogies from friends and admirers who remembered her tireless work as a pioneering scientist and champion of animal welfare.
