The Election Commission on Monday ordered a Special Revision of electoral rolls in Assam, with the final voter list slated for publication on February 10, 2026. The schedule calls for house-to-house verification from November 22 to December 20, and January 1, 2026 has been set as the qualifying date for the state to carry out the SR. The process is designed to update and refine the existing rolls ahead of elections in 2026.
Officials describe the Special Revision as an upgrade of the annual Special Summary Revision, positioned between routine updates and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Instead of using enumeration forms, booth-level officers will verify electors on a pre-filled register, streamlining the process and reducing chances of errors. There are special provisions for citizenship in Assam, and verification is already underway under Supreme Court supervision, now contributing to the rationale for replacing SIR with SR in this cycle.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the decision and pledged full government cooperation to the EC-SVEEP team to complete the revision in a transparent and time-bound manner. According to the schedule, an integrated draft electoral roll will be published on December 27, followed by the final roll on February 10, 2026. The exercise is expected to deliver clean, updated rolls for all eligible citizens in the state.
This move is framed as a measure to enhance accuracy and transparency ahead of the 2026 polls, ensuring voters are correctly listed and any citizenship-related concerns are addressed within the established legal framework.
