Zelenskyy Shakes Up Military! New Army Chief & Fedorov Returns Amid Protests 🇺🇦

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has initiated a significant reshuffle of the country's military leadership, a decision that follows a period of nationwide protests sparked by the earlier dismissal of popular defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

In a late-night television address, Zelenskyy confirmed the firing of Ukraine's commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi. Syrskyi was previously credited with leading the successful defense of Kyiv and orchestrating a counter-invasion into Russia's Kursk province in the summer of 2024, a notable event as foreign tanks entered Russian territory for the first time since World War II.

Replacing Syrskyi will be Mykhailo Drapatyi, described as a popular and innovative general. Drapatyi is now tasked with overseeing a comprehensive reorganisation of the army's command structure, according to the president. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Syrskyi, acknowledging his contributions and stating, "We have come a long way. The defence of Ukraine continues. And every soldier deserves to be treated with respect."

Crucially, President Zelenskyy also announced the return of Mykhailo Fedorov to the government, offering him a "prominent position." Fedorov's previous removal as defence minister had ignited widespread demonstrations in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, marking one of the most significant political crises in Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Thousands had taken to the streets, demanding his reinstatement.

This radical reshuffle appears to be an attempt by Zelenskyy to assuage public discontent and consolidate leadership amidst the ongoing conflict. The move reflects the immense pressure on Ukraine's leadership to maintain public trust and an effective military command structure as the war continues.
