The team ultimately fielded Vipraj Nigam as the concussion substitute. Among the 15 players available, Vipraj was the only one who could bowl, even though he is primarily a spinner rather than a pace bowler like Ngidi.
The injury occurred on the third ball of the second over when Ngidi misjudged a ball off Axar Patel, landed awkwardly on the back of his head, and was immediately attended to by medics before being taken to hospital. The decision to opt for Vipraj over Chameera has sparked debate about whether a like-for-like pace replacement could have been achieved under the rules, but the four-foreign-player ceiling left DC with a spinner-paced option instead.
