China welcomes India's decision to speed up business visas for Chinese professionals, signaling a thaw in ties and smoother cross-border exchanges.
India has tweaked its visa rules to speed up the issuance of business visas for Chinese professionals, a change that comes as Chinese applicants have surged for short visits. Under the new policy, Chinese visitors aiming for business engagements can apply for a B visa—shorter in duration than the traditional employment visa—alongside the existing E visa option. Officials say these visas could be granted within three to four weeks, a significant shortening of the wait for many professionals.
Beijing welcomed the move, calling it a positive step that serves the common interests of both sides. A foreign ministry spokesperson in Beijing noted the policy shift and said China will maintain communication with India to facilitate people-to-people exchanges and practical cooperation. The statement underscores that cross-border travel now could be smoother for business professionals traveling between the two countries.
Previously, Chinese nationals visiting India for business typically received employment visas valid for six months or more. The new approach expands the visa category options, with the goal of making it easier for companies to deploy skilled professionals for short-term assignments. While the changes are said to apply to nationals of all countries, Chinese nationals stand to benefit the most from the streamlined process.
The move follows a thaw in ties after a period of tension over border disputes in 2020. A high-level dialogue between leaders signaled a reset in relations, and the visa policy tweak is seen as part of ongoing efforts to boost trade and investment and address skilled technician shortages in both economies.
Analysts say the real test will be whether the faster processing translates into more frequent business trips and joint ventures. If successful, it could accelerate collaboration in sectors ranging from manufacturing to technology and finance, and perhaps encourage more people-to-people exchanges beyond the business realm.
