Goa nightclub owners Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, linked to the December 6 blaze at Birch by Romeo Lane that killed 25 people, are being deported from Thailand and are expected to be brought to Delhi for transit remand. A Goa police officer said a team will travel to Delhi to secure custody when they exit the airport, with the aim of presenting them before a Delhi court on Tuesday. The two were detained by Thai authorities at their hotel in Phuket last week following a request from India. Their passports have been impounded by the Indian government, and a Blue Notice was issued through Interpol. After a Bangkok detention, they are set to be deported to India and then moved to Goa for further legal proceedings.
The incident at Birch by Romeo Lane has prompted a wider police investigation, which found the venue had been operating illegally for around 18 months with an expired license and without the requisite fire safety measures. The Luthras, who fled to Thailand hours after the fire, will be produced before the Delhi court to seek transit remand, after which a Goa police team will transport them to Goa by Tuesday night. The Indian government’s actions, including the emergency certificate issued by the Indian embassy in Thailand, underscore the coordinated international effort to bring the case back to India for accountability.
Legal authorities in India are pursuing charges under sections related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, endangering life and personal safety, and negligent conduct with fire or combustible matter.
