Veteran journalist Katie Couric recently revealed a frightening medical episode that caused a mysterious "black hole" in her memory. In a candid Substack post titled “The Day I’ll Never Remember,” Couric, 69, shared details about being hospitalized after she was diagnosed with transient global amnesia (TGA), a sudden and temporary loss of memory.
The incident occurred during a Saturday in June while Couric and her financier husband, John Molner, were attending the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado. Couric recounted that she blacked out from “about noon” until “at least 7 p.m.” and has no recollection of the events during this period. The last thing she remembers is grabbing lunch at a hot dog stand before going on to speak at two panels. Despite participating, she admits having "no idea what we talked about, or of what occurred when the panels ended."
Molner, who also contributed to the Substack post, initially didn't notice anything unusual about Couric’s performance during the panels but did observe that she “appeared weak and dizzy.” The gravity of the situation became apparent as they were leaving, with Molner realizing, “Katie was definitely not all there.”
The couple promptly went to an Aspen hospital, where the situation grew more concerning. Couric struggled with basic facts, confusing the month and year, believing it was 2024, and incorrectly stating that Joe Biden was president. She also couldn't recall having a three-week-old granddaughter. Doctors diagnosed her with transient global amnesia.
Reflecting on the experience, Couric expressed relief, stating, “This was a freaky occurrence, it could have been much more serious.” While the memory of those seven hours remains lost, she emphasized her gratitude for the outcome and shared her story to shed light on this unsettling, yet often benign, neurological event.
