RIO RICO, Ariz. — Investigators are expanding their search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie, who vanished from her Arizona home on February 1. Authorities said a person was detained for questioning Tuesday in connection with the disappearance after the FBI released surveillance images of a masked individual carrying a handgun holster outside Guthrie's front door the night she went missing. Deputies stopped a vehicle south of Tucson and detained a delivery man who later said he was innocent; officials have not confirmed whether that person is connected to the case or released.
At least one court-authorized search was underway Tuesday night at a location in Rio Rico, about an hour south of Tucson and roughly 15 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. The operation was expected to take several hours, authorities said. The FBI has distributed clips and photos showing a person wearing a ski mask, gloves, a backpack, and what appeared to be a firearm holster. The agency has stressed there is no confirmation about the person’s involvement, and investigators have cautioned the public not to jump to conclusions.
Guthrie's family has spoken publicly about her condition. She is described as mentally sound but with limited mobility, and she relies on several medications. Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have released video messages pleading for her return and indicating a willingness to pay a ransom.
