In a candid and emotional interview on 60 Minutes, Patrick Clancy, the ex-husband of Lindsay Clancy, has revealed his profound reasons for forgiving her after she killed their three young children. This marks his first public statement since the high-profile mistrial in the case. Clancy's defense team never denied she caused the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and eight-month-old Callan at their Duxbury, Massachusetts home in 2023.
Instead, they argued she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis. Patrick, now with his new wife Rachel Danis, acknowledged his own lack of understanding of the condition at the time.
I could piece together what it was like to be really, really anxious or depressed, but I didn't know how to manage a postpartum illness,
he stated, emphasizing the tragically deceptive nature of mental illness.
He directly addressed the harsh media and social media labels, such as “Killer Mom” or “Monster,” asserting that these were inaccurate. “I believe that it was her mental illness that caused that,” Clancy explained. His decision to forgive, he revealed, was also a personal necessity: “If I didn't get there, I would be eaten up inside forever.” The interview also shed light on Lindsay Clancy's struggles leading up to the tragedy.
Patrick recounted her repeated emergency room visits after their third child's birth and a brief, one-day discharge from a program for postpartum depression patients in December 2022. He described her state as a “huge lack of sleep; deep, deep depression; intrusive thoughts” during that period.
During the mistrial, 11 out of 12 jurors had leaned towards clearing Lindsay Clancy of criminal responsibility due to her mental state, but a single dissenting juror led to a deadlock. Patrick's testimony during the trial had previously detailed her battle with postpartum mental health. Amidst his immense grief, Patrick Clancy and Rachel Danis, an infertility specialist, are now building a new life together and planning to start their own family.
He expressed his poignant wish from that devastating time:
Just give me one. Just give me one kid, and I would raise him as best I could, and I would give him the best life I possibly could. I'd tell him about his brother and sister.
Tragically, Callan, the youngest, died in his arms at the hospital.
Clancy also condemned social media speculation that attempted to assign him blame for the killings, calling it “deeply harmful to the legacy of my children” and a “huge distraction from what really matters here, which is perinatal mental health.” His interview serves as a powerful call for greater understanding and support for mental health, particularly for new parents.
