A devastating Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon early Saturday claimed the lives of seven people and wounded three, marking one of the deadliest incidents since a fragile truce between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect on June 20. The state-run National News Agency reported that the attack targeted a home on the outskirts of Ansar village, where paramedics are still bravely searching through the rubble.
This tragic event casts a dark shadow over the "framework agreement" announced on June 26, which aimed for an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon and the disarmament of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group. This agreement also envisioned steps towards a future peace deal between the two nations, which have technically been in a state of war for nearly 80 years. However, Hezbollah staunchly refused direct talks and was not a party to this agreement, accusing the Lebanese government of making too many concessions without guaranteeing an Israeli pullout.
Despite the supposed truce, Israeli military operations have persisted almost daily in the region north of the Litani River, an area that has largely served as a de facto boundary, with significant portions to the south remaining under Israeli military control. The recent Rome talks, the seventh round between Lebanon and Israel, failed to bridge these deep divides. Earlier this month, the shaky ceasefire saw its first Israeli casualties when two soldiers were killed in an explosion in southern Lebanon, though Hezbollah remained silent on the incident.
The wider conflict between Israel and Hezbollah reignited on March 2, following rocket fire from Hezbollah two days after the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Since then, Israeli strikes in Lebanon have reportedly killed over 4,000 people, including hundreds of civilians, alongside approximately 40 soldiers. This latest attack further highlights the extreme volatility and human cost of the ongoing tensions in the region.
