The incident unfolded as the England team was making its move from a pre-training base in Florida to their designated World Cup base camp in Kansas City. Before their charter jet even touched down, some of their essential (and some not-so-essential) equipment went missing.
Jackson County, Missouri, prosecutors quickly moved to charge Mustafa Salik and Erfan Kamal, both hailing from San Antonio, Texas, with one felony count each of receiving stolen property. This class D felony carries a potential sentence of up to seven years in prison. Bond for both men has been set at $75,000.
"Jackson County will not tolerate any criminal activity that targets World Cup visitors, including the international teams that have travelled here to compete," stated Jackson County prosecutor Melesa Johnson. She commended the Kansas City Police Department and on-call attorneys for their swift action in filing charges.
The stolen items, though recovered, paint an interesting picture. They included nine pairs of cleats, goalkeeper gloves, a World Cup soccer ball, various team shirts and shorts, electronics, stuffed animals, several signed national team jerseys, and even a Lego set of Nike Air shoes. Thankfully, none of the property was deemed critical for England's immediate preparations.
Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas also expressed gratitude for the rapid resolution, saying, "I am grateful for the quick work of the Kansas City Police Department and the prosecutor's office in resolving an investigation across several states, helping crime victims recover goods stolen in transit, and ensuring the accused will face prosecution." Mayor Lucas reiterated the city's commitment to safety, assuring that offenders would be held accountable swiftly.
