Delhi HC orders Jaideep Sengar to surrender in Unnao custodial death case
Delhi High Court directs Jaideep Sengar to surrender as it reviews his bail extension plea in the Unnao custodial death matter.
The Delhi High Court on Friday directed Jaideep Sengar, brother of Unnao rape case convict Kuldeep Sengar, to surrender before jail authorities in connection with his conviction in the custodial death case of the survivor's father.
The bench was hearing a plea by the convict seeking a further extension of interim bail on suspension of the 10-year sentence. It observed that the interim bail granted to Jaideep Sengar in July 2024 was last extended in April 2025 and, despite five scheduled dates, no order for further extension or suspension had been passed. In response to a request for health-based extension, the bench stated, "You surrender and then we will see." The senior counsel for Jaideep Sengar assured the court that he would surrender by Saturday, and the matter was listed for hearing next week.
Jaideep Sengar, 50, had sought the bail extension on grounds that he is suffering from oral cancer. The Central Bureau of Investigation had earlier opposed any extension, claiming the prescription cited by Sengar was fabricated. The plea claimed he is battling stage IV oral cancer and requires ongoing, specialized medical care, noting he has spent about four years in custody. The high court had granted interim bail to Jaideep Sengar on July 3, 2024.
This development comes as the court weighs the balance between health concerns and the need for accountability in the Unnao custodial death case, alongside the broader implications for the survivor’s appeal and related convicts.
