Delhi-NCR Braces for Dust Storms and Rain Amidst Scorching 45°C Heatwave

Delhi-NCR residents are currently navigating a dramatic shift in weather patterns. After enduring a relentless heatwave with temperatures soaring past 45 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department has signaled that a dust storm is on the horizon. This storm is expected to be followed by thunderstorms and light rainfall across Delhi, Noida, and surrounding areas, providing a much-needed, albeit dusty, interruption to the extreme heat.

According to the latest weather notices, an orange alert is active for areas like Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad. These regions are bracing for moderate thunderstorms and lightning. The incoming winds are carrying sand from the Thar desert, which might lead to a dip in air quality even as it brings the temperature down slightly. Other spots like Faridabad, Ballabhgarh, and Indirapuram are also on high alert for strong surface winds.

The heat has been particularly grueling lately, marked by the occurrence of 'warm nights.' In fact, Delhi recently saw its warmest May night in 14 years, with minimum temperatures hovering around 32.4 degrees Celsius—six degrees above the seasonal average. This phenomenon occurs when the ground fails to cool off after a blistering day, making the heat feel inescapable around the clock.

While the immediate forecast of rain and dust brings some variety to the weather, meteorologists suggest that more substantial relief might be a few days away. Significant cooling is anticipated to arrive around May 28 or by the end of the week, when more consistent rain and thunderstorms are expected to finally break the grip of this severe heatwave. Until then, the yellow alert for heatwave conditions remains in effect, and residents are advised to stay cautious during peak hours.
