Tiny tsunami after 6.9 quake hits Japan's Iwate coast
A 6.9-magnitude offshore quake triggered tiny tsunami waves along Japan's northern coast, with peaks around 20 cm; advisory lifted after aftershocks.
An offshore earthquake near Japan's Iwate Prefecture rattled the region on Sunday afternoon. The quake, initially reported as magnitude 6.7 and later revised to 6.9, struck in the waters off the coast around 5:03 p.m. The first tsunami arrived at the northern city of Miyako at 5:37 p.m., but it was so small that the Japan Meteorological Agency said it could not measure its size. The United States Geological Survey logged the quake at magnitude 6.8, while aftershocks followed in the 4.6–6.3 range. A tsunami advisory was issued for the area, then lifted shortly after 8 p.m. local time. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
