Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz made a triumphant return to the US Open, dispelling any doubts about his fitness with a dominant straight-sets victory over Roman Safiullin. The Spaniard, who had been sidelined for over four months due to a wrist injury, showed no signs of rust as he secured a 6-4 6-4 6-4 win on the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium court.
This marks his first Grand Slam appearance since Wimbledon, having also missed the French Open earlier this year due to the same injury. Alcaraz's journey back to the court was not without its challenges. He had a brief mixed doubles appearance as a tune-up, and even double-faulted on his first point in that match, still wearing a protective sleeve.
Against Safiullin, a similar start occurred, but Alcaraz quickly found his rhythm. Aside from an early break of serve in the second set, which he promptly retrieved, the 23-year-old played as if he had never been away from the competitive singles circuit.
Expressing his joy post-match, Alcaraz shared, "I missed it.
I miss the crowd energy, I miss competition. I missed everything. So I'm just really happy that I was able to compete again." He admitted to harboring some doubts about his physical endurance, particularly regarding the demands of a best-of-five sets match.
There were some doubts in the match, I'm not going to lie. I've been thinking about 'am I going to last the best of five, am I going to last playing four sets, five sets? I don't know',
he confessed.
However, his performance on court painted a different picture. He focused on playing his game, trying to "forget everything and tried to enjoy and focus on the things that I had to do and improve." His efforts paid off, allowing him to close out the match efficiently. "I was thinking about 'let's see what's going to happen in the match' so I'm just happy that I won in straight sets and got another win.
Physically I felt really well,” he concluded, assuring fans of his readiness for the challenges ahead.
