FBI Director Kash Patel found himself abruptly summoned to the White House on Friday, cutting short a planned trip to Chicago to visit his girlfriend. Reports indicate Patel was on the tarmac when officials called him back to Washington for an urgent meeting. The New York Times revealed that Patel spent approximately eight hours at the White House, where he was directed to oversee an investigation involving the paper's reporting on the security of Air Force One, an effort that subsequently led to the subpoenaing of several Times reporters.
The unscheduled White House meeting ignited a flurry of speculation. While the specific reason for his summon remained initially unclear, sources cited by MS Now suggested that Trump administration officials had grown "disturbed" by Patel’s recent actions. These included his intentions to leave town during a re-escalation of the Iran war and alleged threats against the president, as well as a social media post where he claimed to own a "gold-plated" jet ski.
Patel himself addressed the reports in a social media post, stating that the MS Now report was "all false except one thing." He confirmed, "I was at the White House, true, and the fake news will find out why soon." However, White House communications director Steven Cheung quickly pushed back against the narrative of internal strife, clarifying on X that there was "no frustration" over Patel’s jet ski tweet and dismissing reports of the FBI leader being under fire as "completely false."
Beyond the immediate White House summon, Patel is facing increasing scrutiny over his alleged conduct. Democrats in the House and Senate, including Rep. Jamie Raskin and Sen. Dick Durbin, are investigating whether Patel misused taxpayer funds. A July 8 letter detailed accusations that Patel demanded "perks" during international travel, such as "VIP snorkeling" trips in Hawaii, and the use of jet skis and helicopters during official FBI business. Patel has firmly denied these allegations, including those related to excessive drinking.
