Former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah has resigned from the party, a jolt for the opposition ahead of the assembly polls. Borah, who led the state unit from 2021 to 2025, announced his decision in a resignation letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. He said he has served the party for 32 years and wants to explain his reasons in detail.
In Guwahati, Borah told reporters that he sent his resignation to Kharge at 8 a.m., adding that he did not resign due to any personal grievance and has not joined any other party yet. He said he has explained in detail why he took the step and will invite mediapersons at an appropriate time to provide all the details. He also asserted that he did not hide anything and will not take any step in secrecy.
Borah, who was the Assam Congress unit president from 2021 to 2025 before being replaced by Gaurav Gogoi, said he has felt ignored by the party leadership and not given his due in the state unit. With Assembly elections just a few months away, the resignation is seen as a significant setback for the Congress in Assam. He also noted that Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi met him recently, suggesting possible personal discussions beyond the resignation itself.
Analysts say the move could reshape the opposition landscape in Assam, potentially influencing campaign dynamics as parties recalibrate strategies ahead of the polls. Borah emphasized that his decision is not about destabilizing the party but about addressing concerns he has carried for years and ensuring the party leadership understands the implications of sidelining long-serving members.
