Federal authorities have successfully thwarted an alleged ISIS-inspired plot to bomb the New York State Capitol building in Albany, leading to the arrest of a 35-year-old woman. Jessica Bowie, an Albany resident, was taken into custody on Wednesday, accused of planning a devastating attack.
According to an FBI criminal complaint filed Thursday, Bowie allegedly pledged allegiance to ISIS, also known as the Islamic State, and had already purchased bomb-making materials earlier this month. Her plan reportedly involved posing as a food delivery worker to carry out the attack on the Capitol.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney John Sarcone announced the charges at a press conference, stating that Bowie faces one count of attempting to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization. This serious charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sarcone described the allegations as "disturbing," noting that it had been some time since such an event had occurred in the district.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a statement, reassuring the public that while there is no immediate threat, law enforcement partners will continue to work closely to protect New Yorkers and ensure community safety.
The criminal complaint further reveals that Bowie, who allegedly converted to Islam about five years ago and adopted the name "Aisha Saif," maintained multiple social media profiles. Through these platforms, she reportedly expressed "anti-American" views. Messages sent between May and July show Bowie allegedly pledging allegiance to the leader of ISIS. From July through August, she purportedly communicated her desire to bomb the Capitol to an FBI source, writing on July 16, "I would like to [target] state capitol." She also reportedly mused about escaping after the attack, saying, "But idk if it's d[oable]... I would like to bomb a capitol building."
This successful intervention by federal agents underscores the continuous efforts to combat terrorism and protect vital public institutions from potential threats.
