SC to Rule on Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam Bail Pleas in Delhi Riots Case
Supreme Court to pronounce verdict on bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and others tied to the 2020 Delhi riots under UAPA.
Delhi's Supreme Court is expected to pronounce its verdict on the bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, and five others in the case linked to the 2020 North East Delhi riots, a matter pursued under the UAPA.
Khalid had been granted interim bail by an Additional Sessions Judge at the Karkardooma court on December 11, 2025 to attend his sister’s wedding. The bail, valid from December 16 to December 29, comes with conditions: he must refrain from using social media and may meet only his family, relatives and close friends; he is to stay at home or at the wedding venue during this period.
The riots in 2020 left 53 people dead and over 700 injured. The Delhi High Court had previously denied bail to Khalid, Imam, and the other accused, leading to the current appeals before the Supreme Court.
Legal observers say the court's decision could influence how bail is considered in UAPA cases going forward, balancing national security concerns with individual rights.
