Strait of Hormuz Stalled: 80 Mines Block Key Global Shipping Lane!

The critical Strait of Hormuz, a choke point for a significant portion of the world's maritime trade, remains largely impassable due to an estimated 80 mines. This revelation comes from Intertanko, a prominent tanker owners' association, which warns that normal shipping cannot resume for "some time" despite recent diplomatic efforts.

The central route through the Strait, a traffic separation scheme established between Iran and Oman in 1968, was reportedly mined by Tehran during recent conflicts. This has forced vessels, including oil tankers, cargo ships, and bulk carriers, to either remain anchored or risk navigating a perilous alternative close to the Omani coast, where the danger of running aground is high.

Even with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the US and Iran, which allowed some vessels to exit the Gulf on Thursday, the presence of these numerous mines presents a formidable obstacle to full operational recovery. Phil Belcher, marine director at Intertanko, emphasized the monumental task of clearing "an enormous amount" of mines.

The disruption has not only impacted global trade but also left approximately 20,000 seafarers stranded. While some resourceful crews managed to "sneak through" at night with their transmitters off and US assistance, others reportedly resorted to paying an unofficial "Tehran's tollbooth" to use Iranian waters.

In a move to address this critical issue, a UK-France mission is reportedly stepping in to fill a mine clearance gap, suggesting international recognition of the severity of the situation. The shipping industry is eager to return to the standard, safer route, which historically saw around 130 ships pass through daily, underscoring the strait's immense importance to global commerce.
