Matthew Perry Doc Reveals $7M Sober Journey & Inner Battles
A new Netflix documentary, 'The One About Matthew Perry,' explores the late 'Friends' star's $7 million battle with addiction, his sister's candid revelations, and the true cost of fame.
Netflix is set to release a poignant three-part documentary titled "The One About Matthew Perry" on October 27, marking almost three years since the beloved "Friends" star's passing. This documentary promises to offer an intimate look beyond his iconic role as Chandler Bing, delving into his profound struggles with addiction, his relentless pursuit of sobriety, and the personal stories shared by those closest to him.
Directed by Emmy Award winner Mary Robertson, the series features the first interview with Matthew's sister, Mia Perry Bowick, since his death. She offers a raw and moving account of her brother's journey, revealing the immense personal and financial cost of his fight against addiction. Bowick shared that Matthew spent a staggering $7 million in his determined efforts to get sober, highlighting the gravity with which he approached his disease.
The documentary incorporates never-before-seen photographs and videos from the Perry family's private archives, charting Matthew's path from an aspiring actor to a global television sensation. Yet, it also unflinchingly addresses the paradox of his fame. Archival footage captures Matthew reflecting on his early desire for celebrity: "I said, 'God, you can do anything you want to me.
Just please make me famous.'" However, he quickly realized that achieving stardom didn't alleviate his internal turmoil. "I was extremely happy when I got famous, then it's like, 'Uh-oh, this didn't fix what's inside me. This didn't do what I thought it was going to do,'" he candidly admits.
Matthew also speaks about the challenging nature of his addiction, recalling warnings from friends:
I had people telling me to stop, saying, ‘You’re going to kill yourself if you keep going like this, and I just didn’t know how.’
His sister, Mia, elaborates on the deep loneliness he often felt, a void he struggled to fill. She emphasizes the blend of humor and tragedy that defined his life, stating, "All great stories have comedy and tragedy in them, and that certainly was Matthew’s story."
In a statement accompanying the documentary's release, Mia Perry Bowick explained her decision to speak publicly now. She hopes the series will provide a deeper understanding of Matthew "as a whole person, not just as Chandler and not just as someone who struggled with addiction." She described him as having "a beautiful heart and a generous spirit," even in his darkest moments, capable of making people laugh and feel loved.
"When he made people laugh, it made him feel good," she adds, underlining his profound connection to humor.
Beyond family insights, the documentary will also feature accounts from Matthew Perry's longtime friends, including David Pressman, Roger Castillo, and West Huddleston, alongside collaborators who witnessed his rise in Hollywood. These perspectives aim to paint a comprehensive portrait of a complex, talented, and deeply human individual whose legacy extends far beyond the screen.
"I was Matthew's buddy for 40 years," David Pressman shares in the trailer, noting that his friend "would definitely want every" - implying he'd want every aspect of his story told.
This documentary is poised to be a powerful tribute, offering fans and new audiences alike a chance to understand the man behind the legendary character, shedding light on his personal battles, his resilience, and the enduring impact of his life.
