US Orbital Weapons: Russia Warns of "Catastrophic Consequences"

The United States has publicly acknowledged the deployment of "on-orbit space control weapons," a revelation that has drawn a sharp and critical response from Russia.

Moscow warns that Washington's actions risk "catastrophic consequences for humanity" and threaten long-term stability in space-based activities.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, stated on Tuesday, September 16, 2026, that the U.S. pursuit of "narrow self-interests" in space completely disregards the severe implications of any armed conflict in orbit. She emphasized that the presence of U.S. weapons in space jeopardizes the future of space exploration and poses "colossal risks" to numerous socio-economic processes on Earth, which directly impact people’s well-being.

The U.S. admission came from Air Force Secretary Troy Meink, who told a conference near Washington, D.C., on Monday, September 14, 2026, that the United States possesses weapons "capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile adversary action." This marks the strongest public acknowledgment by a U.S. official regarding American weapons in space, amidst rising space tensions with both Russia and China.

Ms. Zakharova described the U.S. acknowledgment as an attempt to "distract world attention from the U.S.’ own aggressive strivings in terms of space." She also dismissed U.S. accusations that Moscow is developing anti-satellite weapons as "absurd."

Furthermore, Zakharova criticized the "moratorium on testing... anti-satellite missiles" promoted by the "collective West" as hypocritical. She argued that this moratorium does not apply to the weapons the U.S. already possesses, nor does it cover other types of anti-satellite systems that Washington is reportedly developing.

In response to these developments, Russia plans to present resolutions co-authored by the nation at the U.N.

General Assembly next month. These resolutions aim to bar the deployment of space-based weapons and promote greater transparency in the use of space, signaling Moscow's intent to address the growing militarization of outer space on the international stage.
