The incident, which unfolded over the last 48 hours, has sent shockwaves through the local community and sparked a massive multi-agency investigation to track down those responsible for the toxic brew.
The deaths were reported across several localities, including Phugewadi, Kale Padal, and Hadapsar. In Phugewadi alone, eight people died within a single 24-hour window. Family members of the victims described a terrifying and rapid decline in health. Many of the deceased complained of severe dizziness, uneasiness, and breathing difficulties before collapsing. Medical reports also noted symptoms like frothing at the mouth and a sudden, drastic drop in heart rate among the victims.
Law enforcement agencies have moved quickly, uncovering what appears to be a wide-reaching network of illegal liquor production and distribution. A key breakthrough came with the arrest of Yogesh Wankhede, a known bootlegger with a criminal history, who is believed to be a central figure in this case. Along with Wankhede, seven others have been taken into custody following a series of raids across the district.
Initial reports suggest that the liquor may have been laced with methanol, a highly toxic substance often used in industrial applications but deadly when ingested.
