Vande Mataram 150th: Mass Singing, Stamps and National Pride

India will mark the 150th anniversary of the national song Vande Mataram with nationwide commemorations beginning this year. In Telangana, the government has directed district Collectors to organize mass singings of the authorized version at 10 a.m. on Friday at Collectorates, government offices and educational institutions. This move underscores the song's enduring place in the national psyche as a symbol of unity and resilience.

The celebrations will culminate in Delhi with the inauguration of the year-long programme by Prime Minister Modi at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, where a commemorative stamp and coin will be released. The programme is designed to travel across the country, inviting citizens to participate in shared singing and reverence for the country’s national song.

Amit Shah has described Vande Mataram as the voice of India’s soul that binds the nation, inspires unity, and energizes the youth. His message reiterates that the song’s legacy endures as a beacon of patriotism while adapting to the country’s evolving democratic spirit.

Historically, Vande Mataram was composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and first published in Bangadarshan on 7 November 1875. It later found a place in Anandamath (1882) and was set to music by Rabindranath Tagore. The year-long celebrations, from November 7, 2025 to November 7, 2026, will celebrate this legacy and its continuing resonance in Indian public life.

Amid the celebrations, a political debate persists about the song’s stanzas, with discussions around which parts are included in official renditions. The conversations reflect the broader, ongoing dialogue about national symbols and their role in a diverse democracy.
