OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Responds to the Passing of Whistleblower Suchir Balaji

OpenAI founder Sam Altman has discussed the death of Suchir Balaji, a controversial whistleblower, in public for the first time. Altman's comments were made in a heated interview with Tucker Carlson, a controversial former Fox News anchor who maintained that Balaji's death was "a murder" rather than a suicide, as determined by the police.

The Interview

Carlson began by bringing up Balaji's earlier grievances regarding OpenAI. He asked,

“You had complaints from one programmer who said you guys were basically stealing people’s stuff and not paying them, and then he wound up murdered. What was that?”

Altman said, "Also a great tragedy. He committed suicide”. Carlson then pressed again, asking, “Do you think he committed suicide?”

“I really do,” Altman said, adding, “He was like a friend of mine." This is like a guy who, not a close friend, but someone who worked at OpenAI for a very long time. I was really shaken by this tragedy. I spent a lot of time trying to, you know, read everything I could as I'm sure you and others did too, about what happened. It looks like a suicide to me."

Carlson maintained that Balaji was "definitely murdered." He indicated blood in several rooms, cut surveillance wires, and what he called "signs of a struggle." Carlson said there was "no indication at all" that the 26-year-old was suicidal. He added that Balaji's mother thinks her son was murdered.

Altman upheld the official findings despite Carlson's persistent demands.

“I spent a lot of time trying to read everything I could, as I’m sure you and others did too, about what happened,” he said.

Who was Suchir Balaji?

A few weeks after accusing OpenAI of copyright violations, Suchir Balaji, a researcher of Indian descent who had spent four years working there, was discovered dead in his San Francisco apartment in November 2024.

Police declared the death to be a suicide, but Balaji's family has denied the suicide theory and accused the investigation of serious flaws.

Sam Altman’s recent remarks reinforce the finding of suicide, but also recognize the emotional and personal impact the loss has had.
