A historic spectacle is set to transform the heart of Washington, D.C., this weekend as the nation's capital hosts the "Freedom 250 Grand Prix," an IndyCar race commemorating the U.S.'s 250th birthday. What’s being dubbed "Trump’s 250 Grand Prix" will see a slice of D.C. converted into a high-speed race track, drawing 25 top IndyCar drivers to the iconic National Mall. This event is not only a major commemorative celebration but is also being highlighted as one of Roger Penske's most significant achievements, demonstrating the complexity and scale of the undertaking.
President Donald Trump, whose administration established the "Freedom 250" organization via Executive Order to coordinate these semiquincentennial events, has expressed high expectations for the race. He projected that the event would achieve "the highest ever ratings of any such race," a claim he made in July when participating drivers visited the White House. Adding a personal touch, President Trump is slated to take a lap around the 1.7-mile track in his presidential limousine, "The Beast," before the competition officially kicks off.
The Grand Prix is the grand finale in a series of high-profile events celebrating the U.S.'s milestone anniversary this summer. Previous celebrations included a UFC fight held on the White House grounds, an athletics tournament known as the "Patriot Games," and the world's largest fireworks display. The IndyCar race, known for its "Indy 500" counterpart in Indianapolis, brings the top tier of single-seater auto racing to the capital.
Race enthusiasts can look forward to practice sessions taking place throughout Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. local time. The main event, a thrilling 147-lap race covering approximately 250 miles, is scheduled to commence at 1:10 p.m. on Sunday. The challenging 1.66-mile, seven-turn course will offer breathtaking views and test drivers' skills as they navigate through some of D.C.'s most recognizable landmarks.
The circuit begins on 3rd Street near the Capitol building, on the east end of the National Mall. It then propels drivers down Pennsylvania Avenue, featuring the course's longest straight stretch at 0.4 miles. Racers will make turns onto 9th Street, 7th Street, and Independence Avenue, speeding past historic sites such as the Lincoln Reflecting Pool and the Smithsonian Museum before looping back. This unique urban track promises an unforgettable experience for both participants and spectators alike, blending high-octane sport with American history.
