James Pickens Jr., the enduring face of Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Richard Webber, has revealed he’s been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The news echoes a plotline on the show, where his character is also grappling with cancer, underscoring a rare real-life-to-screen parallel. In a candid interview with Black Health Matters, Pickens discussed how cancer has affected his family and why he has long prioritized his health checks.
“It's not the kind of news anyone wants to hear,” he said, adding that prostate cancer has run through his family. “My father had it. He had a lot of brothers; several of them had it. I would have been surprised if I hadn’t gotten it.” The actor, who has starred on Grey's Anatomy since its 2005 debut, has emphasized that staying proactive with screenings can make a significant difference. He started PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing at age 41 and, at 73, continues to champion regular health checks. “Because you were so diligent in that piece of your health, it was to your advantage,” his urologist told him, highlighting how early detection can lead to better outcomes.
He noted that in 2024, during his annual physical, his PSA numbers were in the normal range. But earlier this year, the numbers ticked up enough to prompt further testing, including an MRI and additional evaluations. While those details remain part of his medical journey, Pickens stresses that prostate cancer is highly treatable when caught early and that awareness and screening are crucial for men’s health.
