A murder investigation has been launched after a 40-year-old man was tragically shot dead during a memorial service in West London on Friday evening. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene in East Acton, in what police are calling a "senseless act of violence."
Emergency services were called around 7:47 PM after multiple gunshots were heard by members of the public near the junction of Braybrook Street and Erconwald Street. Officers from the Metropolitan Police attended along with the London ambulance service, but despite their efforts, the man could not be saved.
Reports indicate that a large gathering of between 40 and 50 people, including children, were present at the memorial service when the incident occurred. The man's family has been informed and is receiving support from specialist officers during this difficult time. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to confirm the cause of death, but it is believed he sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
DCI Brian Howie, leading the investigation, expressed his condolences, stating,
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of a man whose life was taken in a senseless act of violence.
He added that what should have been a time of remembrance has instead left a family devastated.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Investigators are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of Erconwald Street, Braybrook Street, surrounding roads, or Wormwood Scrubs playground between 6 PM and 8 PM on Friday. They are asking for witnesses to recall anything suspicious, such as people carrying or concealing weapons, individuals on bicycles acting strangely, or vehicles being driven at speed.
The police are also appealing for any photographs, video footage (including dashcam or doorbell recordings), mobile phone footage, or relevant social media posts that could assist their inquiry.
No arrests have been made as the investigation continues into this shocking incident that has left a community reeling.
