India is gearing up to observe the 27th anniversary of Operation Vijay, with a series of poignant and patriotic events scheduled for July 25-26, 2026, in Dras. These commemorations aim to honor the unparalleled courage and sacrifice of Indian soldiers during the Kargil conflict. The iconic Kargil War Memorial at Dras will serve as the central hub for these thematic events, which will also extend to other significant locations, including the forward post area, Sando Top, in the Dras Sector.
The events are set to commence on Saturday, July 25, 2026, with a 'Yudh Sansmaran' at the picturesque Lamochen viewpoint, offering a solemn view of the historic Kargil battlefield. Officials highlighted the significance of this occasion, marking the glorious victory of 1999 when Indian soldiers, against all odds, reclaimed the snow-clad peaks of Kargil from Pakistani infiltrators, showcasing unmatched courage and unwavering resolve. A 'Shaurya Sandhya' honoring this indomitable courage, a musical presentation by the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre Band, and a captivating motorcycle display by 'Shwet Ashwa' are among the many highlights planned.
The 'Yudh Sansmaran' will begin with a powerful 33-minute video clip, recounting the arduous journey of the Kargil war and India’s eventual triumph under Operation Vijay. This will be followed by a moving 17-minute commemorative clip, specifically designed to honor 40 Kargil bravehearts. Their next of kin will be present, emphasizing their extraordinary acts of valor and supreme sacrifice for the nation.
Distinguished guests, including Major General Amit Prakash Singh, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Forever in Operations Division, alongside other senior Army officers, respected Kargil war veterans, 'Veer Naris' (war widows), and 'Veer Matas' (mothers of martyrs), are expected to grace the occasion. Their presence underscores the nation's profound gratitude and respect for its heroes.
Operation Vijay was the strategic military response by India to Pakistan's infiltration in 1999, a limited war that saw immense bravery and determination. Kargil Vijay Diwas, celebrated annually on July 26, commemorates the successful culmination of this operation, a day etched in the annals of Indian military history.
In the afternoon of Saturday, July 25, 2026, the Vishwanathan Stadium in Dras will host a 'Gauravmaya Sanskriti' event. This vibrant cultural showcase is planned to celebrate the spirit of patriotism, India's rich cultural heritage, and the enduring courage that defines the nation. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is also expected to attend to pay his tributes to the Kargil heroes.
