Trump’s hard stance extended beyond criticism of Mamdani to public endorsements. He officially backed former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for the top city post and warned that if Mamdani wins, federal funding could be curtailed. In a blunt assessment, Trump said there would be zero chance of federal support for the city as long as a “Communist” leads the mayor’s office, underscoring the high-stakes nature of the race as election day looms.
Polls have shown Mamdani ahead in a race that has drawn three major players: Mamdani, former Governor Cuomo, and Republican outsider Curtis Sliwa. At 34 years old, Mamdani has positioned himself as the left-wing frontrunner in what many voters see as a nationally watched contest as New Yorkers head to the polls on Election Day.
