New Delhi hosted AI Impact Summit 2026, India's biggest-ever gathering on artificial intelligence, drawing more than 20 heads of state, 500 global AI leaders, and delegations from over 100 countries. The event connected senior executives from Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and NVIDIA to chart the next phase of AI in business, policy, and society.
Yet what captured attention wasn't the speakers on stage, but who wasn't there. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang skipped the summit, while Bill Gates also did not attend despite Microsoft's sizable investments in India's digital infrastructure. Their absence added a conspicuous note to an event that had otherwise drawn big-name participation.
The list of missing tech giants was even longer: Apple, Perplexity AI, and Elon Musk's xAI were notably absent. Perplexity's Aravind Srinivas, IIT Madras alumnus and prominent Indian-origin figure in AI, was nowhere to be seen at Bharat Mandapam. The company did not issue any official statement explaining the absence.
On the stage, however, major voices did speak: Sundar Pichai, Sam Altman, and Dario Amodei shared the spotlight, signaling India's growing clout in AI discourse even as questions linger about who is shaping the industry's direction.
Observers say the absence of several big names doesn't diminish India's push to position itself as a global AI hub. The summit gathered a diverse mix of policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders, underscoring a moment of transition in the AI landscape where attendance and participation matter as much as announcements.
