DOJ Defends Elon Musk's 'National Security' AI Amid Pollution Lawsuit!

President Donald Trump’s Justice Department has stepped in to defend Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence platform, Grok, declaring it vital for “national security.” This intervention comes in response to a lawsuit filed by the NAACP, which claims that a data center power plant built by Musk's company, xAI, is threatening Black communities with harmful pollution.

Earlier this year, the NAACP sued xAI, alleging the company is illegally operating 57 gas turbines in Southaven, Mississippi. These turbines support its Colossus 2 data center, which powers the Grok chatbot. The group contends that the area’s “frontline and Black community members” have been exposed to hazardous pollutants, a concern voiced by Abre’ Conner, NAACP Director of Environmental and Climate Justice.

In court documents filed recently, Justice Department attorneys are calling for the lawsuit against xAI to be dismissed. They argue that Grok’s continued operation is a “matter of paramount national security,” asserting that the NAACP’s complaint “threaten[s] artificial intelligence innovation, plus the energy needed to power it.” The DOJ further stated that Grok provides “critical support for the Department of War’s military operations,” with reports indicating the Pentagon even utilized Grok AI to launch 2,000 missiles at Iran.

The NAACP has asked a judge to prohibit xAI from operating its Colossus Gas Plant until it obtains necessary permits and implements pollution controls to prevent further harm. Conner has criticized xAI, suggesting the company is "asking Black and frontline communities to bear the toxic brunt of ‘innovation.’” She emphasized that the NAACP stands firm on the principle that true progress cannot be built by neglecting community health and the environment, stressing that the right to clean air is non-negotiable, especially when companies prioritize expediency over people.
