Pop music sensation Olivia Rodrigo surprised fans at Primavera Sound on Saturday with an unexpected popup set, where she debuted a new collaboration that has sent ripples through the music world. The track, titled “what’s wrong with me,” features none other than Robert Smith, the iconic frontman of The Cure. This collaboration is particularly significant as it marks Rodrigo’s first-ever official partnership on a song.
Rodrigo introduced the song with palpable excitement, sharing with the audience, “it’s really special to me for so many reasons — primarily because it’s my first collaboration. I can’t believe this song exists and with the person that it exists with.” The song is a preview from her highly anticipated upcoming album, "you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love," which is slated for release on June 12th.
The partnership isn't entirely out of the blue. Rodrigo and Smith have cultivated a close friendship over the past couple of years. Smith previously joined Rodrigo on stage during her headlining set at Glastonbury in 2025. Their connection deepened while Rodrigo was crafting her third album, with Smith telling Vogue in a recent interview that they've shared "a couple of memorable nights in the studio together." Smith himself has become a vocal admirer of Rodrigo’s work, praising her previous albums, Sour and GUTS, for their compelling quality.
During her Primavera Sound performance, Rodrigo also treated fans to other new tracks from the upcoming album, “drop dead” and “the cure” (a title she clarified has no relation to Smith’s band). Alongside these new offerings, she performed fan favorites including “bad idea right?,” “deja vu,” “all-american bitch,” and “good 4 u.” Fans will have more opportunities to hear these songs and others from her discography when "The Unraveled Tour" kicks off in September.
Coincidentally, The Cure also performed at Primavera Sound on Friday, delivering a 29-song set filled with classics and deep cuts, making it a truly memorable festival for fans of both artists.
