Before the fatal act, Ram reportedly asked his children to stand on a steel trunk and place sarees around their necks in a manner described by witnesses as a makeshift noose; the sarees belonged to their mother, who had died some time before. The two sons managed to escape and alerted neighbors, allowing authorities to begin a formal inquiry.
