Gurugram: Live-in partner pours sanitiser on woman, tries to set fire

In Gurugram, a 19-year-old student from Tripura was subjected to a brutal assault by her live-in partner in a flat in Badshahpur police station area. The man, said to be from Delhi’s Narela, allegedly beat the woman, smashed her head against a wall, and poured sanitiser on her private parts in a bid to set them on fire. It is also claimed that he attacked her legs with a knife and threatened to cripple her, while filming the act on a mobile phone.

The couple had met online through an app last year and began living together in Gurugram after forming a relationship that the FIR describes as being under the pretext of marriage. The 19-year-old, who is pursuing a B.Sc. in biotechnology, is originally from Tripura and was staying in a PG in Sector 69 when the incident unfolded.

Police registered an FIR on Thursday night under sections 115, 118(1), 118(2), 127(2), 69 and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. The accused, named as Shivam, hails from Delhi’s Narela. The victim is currently receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Earlier this week, on Monday, February 16, the woman reportedly faced a brutal assault that left her hospitalised after the attack, which is being treated as a serious case of violence against a woman in a live-in relationship.

Investigators say the man is accused of recording the assault, adding to the gravity of the alleged crime. Police are continuing to probe the case, including the motive and sequence of events, and have not publicly disclosed an arrest at this time. The broader context of the incident has prompted renewed attention to the safety of women in protective relationships and the handling of domestic violence cases in the region.
