Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Washington for a three-day visit starting April 8, aimed at reviewing the full spectrum of India-U.S. bilateral ties. The discussions are expected to cover a wide range of issues, including trade, defense, science and technology, as well as regional and global developments of mutual interest.
A key part of the talks is multilateral issues, including the U.S. sanctions waivers on Russian oil and Iranian oil, as well as exemptions for India’s Chabahar port development. The waivers are set to expire in mid to late April—Russian oil on April 11, Iranian oil on April 19, and Chabahar-related exemptions on April 26—unless extended by the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. Officials are likely to weigh possible extensions and the implications for bilateral cooperation.
Misri is also expected to discuss the next steps in the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement talks, which have stalled after a recent legal and policy shift in the United States. The discussions will span defense, science and technology, and broader regional and global developments, according to the announcements from the Ministry of External Affairs.
The visit coincides with other high-level exchanges, including the visit of India’s Chief of the Air Staff and the U.S. Ambassador to India, signaling a broader push to sustain robust engagement across a range of strategic areas. Diplomatic observers note that the talks could influence the trajectory of the partnership amid evolving Middle East dynamics and ongoing debates over sanctions and energy markets.
MEA said Misri would review the full spectrum of bilateral relations and advance ongoing cooperation across key areas, underscoring a continued push to fortify ties with the United States.
